Some New Year's Resolutions for Photography and Beyond

Happy New Year! Hard to believe that it's 2012 already. I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year. We enjoyed the time off but are all ready to get back to work, but not before I make some resolutions for 2012. Now, I'm not a huge resolutions kind of guy but I always try to list a few things that I'd like to do or accomplish. I think it's a good way to keep things fresh and provide some signposts to go through the year with. So, here is my list of things I'd like to do in 2012. First off the non-photography related goals:

Continue to challenge myself through exercise

I've been someone who has worked out/exercised pretty much my entire life. I started as a runner in High School and College and moved to Road Cycling in earnest about 10 years ago. As I get older I want to keep doing what I can to stay fit and increase the odds that I'll have a long and healthy life. With that in mind I have plans on doing several "century" rides this year along with continuing to use our indoor rowing machine to provide a solid upper body workout that cycling lacks.

Get a secondary professional designation to expand my career knowledge

In my real life I work in the world financial services. I really enjoy the work and in order to expand my knowledge I plan on pursuing a secondary professional designation in 2012. It will involve a lot of study time but I'm looking forward to doing it. I might not finish it in 2012 but I'll be well on my way.

Now, onto the fun stuff, :-) my Photography goals for 2012:

Complete a Project 365

Being relatively new to "serious" photography my biggest challenge is to get opportunities to shoot. I figure a Project 365 (taking a picture a day for an entire year) will be a great way to force me to think more about photography and to make it part of my everyday life. There's only one potentially small problem; I might only be able to get to 355 since the world is supposed to end on December 21st of this year. Oh well, I'll deal with that in December I guess ;-) So, to officially start off my own little Project 365, here's a self portrait of me after our group's annual January 1st ride:

Here I am after our annual January 1st group bike ride

Don't I look spiffy in my bike riding clothes? This was just after a 38 mile ride with the usual group of guys that I ride with on weekends. Many of us do century rides together throughout the year. We're all solidly into middle-age but like to think that we could all ride the Tour De France if only we were asked. It's a fun group and it is a great way to spend time outdoors doing something we love.

Get a new/better tripod

I think it's really time to get a better tripod. I purchased a Slik Sprint Pro II Tripod back in September for our trip out West. It's a super portable tripod but isn't the most steady thing in the world. I'll still keep using it from time to time but I'd really like to get a decent carbon fiber tripod with a decent ballhead. I'm looking at one of the Benro Travel Angel tripods or a Feisol tripod.

That's pretty much it for goals/resolutions for 2012. I'm sure I'll think of other things I'd like to do along the way but for now this is a good start.

What resolutions (photography related or not) have you made for 2012?
